Rolling Cargo

Rolling cargo is freight that can rotate or roll if not blocked, cradled, or otherwise controlled.

Plain-English Meaning

Round or wheeled cargo needs special review because downward force may not stop rolling by itself. The load may need blocking, chocks, cradles, direct restraint, or other controls suited to the cargo.

Pipe, concrete pipe, coils, paper rolls, boulders, and vehicles each have different source and policy questions. Do not transfer a setup from one rolling cargo type to another without review.

A roll path can open after dunnage crushes, straps loosen, or cargo settles. Reinspection is part of the practical control plan.

In day-to-day freight work, the safest use of the term is narrow and factual. Confirm the current rule, equipment rating, shipment condition, and company procedure before using any glossary definition for a live securement decision.

Watchouts

  • Look for open roll paths.
  • Check chocks, cradles, blocking, and tiedown direction.
  • A round load can also slide or tip, so do not check roll alone.
