Plain-English Meaning

Ratchet binders allow controlled tightening, but they still need rating, compatibility, and condition checks. They are part of the tiedown path, not an accessory outside the WLL review.

Thread damage, bent handles, worn hooks, poor pawl engagement, or mismatched chain can limit safe use. Check the binder before counting the chain assembly in a securement plan.

Ratchet binders may settle or loosen if cargo compresses. Recheck tension under company policy and after the load has moved.

In day-to-day freight work, the safest use of the term is narrow and factual. Confirm the current rule, equipment rating, shipment condition, and company procedure before using any glossary definition for a live securement decision.

• Inspect threads, hooks, pawls, and handle condition.
