Working Load Limit

Working load limit is the rated load a securement component is designed to handle in service.

Plain-English Meaning

In cargo securement, WLL is used to decide how much capacity can be credited to a tiedown or securement system. A marked strap, chain, binder, winch, hook, or anchor point may each have its own rating.

The useful number is not the strongest component in the path. The limiting component controls how much capacity can be counted. A high-rated chain used with a lower-rated binder or anchor point should not be credited as if every part had the higher rating.

In day-to-day freight work, the safest use of the term is narrow and factual. Confirm the current rule, equipment rating, shipment condition, and company procedure before using any glossary definition for a live securement decision.

Watchouts

  • Do not infer WLL from appearance alone.
  • Damaged or unmarked equipment should be handled under company policy.
  • WLL math does not decide compliance by itself.
