Aggregate WLL Calculator
This calculator totals known WLL entries and compares them with cargo weight for planning discussion only.
Quick Answer
This calculator totals known WLL entries and compares them with cargo weight for planning discussion only.
What this calculator does
Enter each tiedown's credited WLL value separately. The calculator sums all entered values and compares the total to the cargo weight you enter, displaying whether the aggregate appears to meet a general planning target.
Enter each tiedown individually — do not combine multiple tiedowns into a single entry. Each separate device should be a separate input so the count is visible alongside the total. Use values from manufacturer markings or carrier-approved tables only.
Direct and indirect tiedowns
The federal rule may credit direct and indirect tiedowns differently when calculating aggregate WLL. Before treating all entered values as equivalent, verify how the applicable rule (49 CFR 393.102 and any commodity section) requires each tiedown type to be credited.
This calculator does not classify entered values as direct or indirect — it adds whatever numbers you provide. If some tiedowns are indirect and should be credited at a lower value per the current rule, you must apply that adjustment before entering the values.
Recommended use
Use this calculator to check whether your planned tiedown assembly — at correctly credited rated capacities — appears to reach the aggregate WLL requirement for the cargo weight. If the total falls short, the plan needs additional or higher-rated tiedowns.
After the calculation, verify the actual requirement against the current eCFR text and carrier policy. The calculator shows whether the math adds up; it does not determine whether the securement plan is complete or compliant.
Checklist
- Enter each tiedown WLL separately from marked ratings.
- Do not include damaged, unmarked, or unknown-capacity devices.
- Apply direct versus indirect credit treatment before entering values.
- Verify the aggregate WLL requirement in the applicable eCFR section.
Practical Notes
This tool is a planning aid only. Verify current device ratings, applicable regulation text, and carrier policy before using any calculated result in a live securement decision.
Regulation Coverage
Mapped source sections used for this page. This is a source map, not a replacement for the current regulation.
- 49 CFR 393.108How working load limit is determined for securement devices · confidence: high
WLL determination source. Pairs with 393.102 to support WLL and aggregate WLL pages with a direct regulation reference.
- 49 CFR 393.102Performance criteria, tiedowns, and working load limit concepts · confidence: high
High confidence for WLL concepts. Calculator pages remain educational because a source-backed capacity concept still does not inspect a load.
