Glossary
Stake Pocket
A stake pocket is a trailer pocket that can receive a stake or compatible cargo-control fitting.
Plain-English Meaning
Stake pockets can be part of a containment or tiedown arrangement when the equipment and policy support that use. They are common reference points during flatbed walkarounds because they sit along the trailer edge.
A stake pocket should be inspected like any other load-control point. Look at the pocket, the surrounding rail, welds, corrosion, and whether the fitting seats fully.
The term does not prove a rated anchor point. Use manufacturer information or carrier policy before counting it as known securement capacity.
In day-to-day freight work, the safest use of the term is narrow and factual. Confirm the current rule, equipment rating, shipment condition, and company procedure before using any glossary definition for a live securement decision.
Watchouts
- Bent or cracked pockets may not hold fittings correctly.
- Do not assume every pocket has the same rating or allowed use.
- A stake that fits loosely can create movement even when the pocket looks usable.
