Glossary
Friction Mat
A friction mat is material placed between cargo and a deck or surface to increase resistance to sliding.
Plain-English Meaning
Friction mats may help reduce sliding on certain loads, especially where cargo surface and deck conditions allow them to work as intended.
They should be treated as part of a system. Dirt, water, oil, damaged mats, poor placement, or cargo shape can reduce usefulness.
In day-to-day freight work, the safest use of the term is narrow and factual. Confirm the current rule, equipment rating, shipment condition, and company procedure before using any glossary definition for a live securement decision.
Watchouts
- Do not use friction as a substitute for required securement unless a verified rule and policy allow it.
- Check mat condition and coverage.
- Wet or contaminated surfaces change the picture.
