Bracing

Bracing is support placed to keep cargo from moving, tipping, collapsing, or pressing into a vulnerable area.

Plain-English Meaning

Bracing is common inside enclosed trailers and around irregular open-deck cargo. It may work with blocking, load bars, straps, airbags, dunnage, or trailer structures.

The brace has to resist the expected movement without crushing the freight or damaging the trailer.

For dry van and reefer freight, bracing should be checked against packaging strength, door pressure, track condition, and airflow needs.

In day-to-day freight work, the safest use of the term is narrow and factual. Confirm the current rule, equipment rating, shipment condition, and company procedure before using any glossary definition for a live securement decision.

Watchouts

  • A brace against weak packaging can fail.
  • Do not block airflow needed for reefer freight.
  • Trailer walls and tracks have limits.
  • A brace that is not seated or locked can become loose cargo.
